Make 2016 Your Most Positive Year Ever!
Before the start of 2015, I never dreamed that I could have had such an amazing year. I had just been introduced to Functional Medicine, my business hit a plateau and I was still having issues with my health. That was when I decided to set intentions for positive growth, which have in turn made 2015 an amazing year for me. I intended to take more time for myself, make smarter health choices and focus more energy on my business.
Energy is the currency of life – the energy you exude and the energy you surround yourself with determine your mood, your health, your mental sanity and your progress in life. Surround yourself with positive energy and your energy levels will be boosted. If you are surrounded by negative energy, your mindset will remain negative and you will suffer.
Here are some simple but meaningful steps that you can take right now, to create a positive outlook for the upcoming year and make 2016 your most successful year ever.
Decide to find the positivity in one new thing each day.
Its absolutely amazing what can change in your outlook when you decide to find the positive rather than the negative. This is especially true when it comes to time. Time is our most limited resource, and there is not a single person who loves having their time wasted or taken from them. If you commute to work on a daily basis, sitting in traffic for hours every day is a great example of time that is wasted.
In 2015, I made a change to my commute – but no I did not move. I decided that the time I spend sitting in my car would be dedicated to learning something new. I turned off the radio and began listening to audiobooks. The positive change and the impact that this small change has had in my life are astounding and immeasurable.
I love driving to work everyday now, as I am bound to learn something new or find a new perspective, which in turn helps me concentrate more as I feel like my time is not being wasted. I have never been much of a reader but I am always excited to listen to the amazing perspectives of people like Seth Godin, Tim Ferriss and Marianne Williamson.
Set Your Intentions for the Year
What are you struggling with currently in your life? Is your health suffering? Are you in a job or career that is not fulfilling? What are the sources of negative energy in your life that you can do without?
Determine where you see yourself exactly one year from now. Late in December 2016, do you want to be in the same position that you are in now or will you be in a better job with more energy and greater daily health.
Open your mind to the possibilities of growth and positive change. Start researching novel ways of dealing with stressors in your life. Our possibilities in life are determined only by the limitations that we place on ourselves.
At the end of last year, I never would have imagined that I could possibly have over 1000 Facebook likes on a professional page that did not yet exist, nor would I have believed that I would end up losing 75 lbs from my maximum weight. Remember that you need to have an open mind in order to break your limiting beliefs.
Set SMART Goals and Perform Regular Check-ins
Next, make your intentions for the year into goals. Goals are more commonly achieved when they are broken down into small, specific and measureable steps. With regular weekly, biweekly, or monthly reviews of your progress you are able to see how far you have come towards reaching your goals and how much closer your are to creating more positivity in your life.
Find an Accountability Partner or Mentor
As humans, we are strongly invested in our own lives. Each of our decisions impact our lives as we are the subject of our decisions. As such it can be very difficult to remove ourselves from our circumstances and see a situation objectively for what it truly is. Our minds tend to wander and create worry and fear regarding the process and outcomes that our decisions hold. This in turn leads to judgment becoming clouded and a feeling of being overwhelmed, that there is so much going on in our lives.
Having someone to check in with and stay accountable to can be very helpful in allowing us to see the objective point-of-view. When we are able to detach ourselves from our circumstances, the feeling of overwhelm will dissipate and our judgment becomes less clouded. We start making smarter choices and get an objective perspective, from someone who is not deeply invested in our decisions.
Define it and you will find it.
Write down everything. Keep a journal beside your bed and ask yourself 3 questions each night, and review it when you wake up in the morning.
- What positive things happened today?
- What can I do better tomorrow?
- What is the one thing I need to do in order to make everything else easier or unnecessary?
Write it down… share it with a friend or accountability partner. It will make you more accountable and create a newfound positivity in your life. This is how you can make 2016 your best and most positive year ever!
